A Guide's Notes on Paris: What We Tell Every Guest on the First Day

The first thing we tell groups is that Paris is not one place. Each arrondissement has a distinct character, pace, opening rhythm and relationship to tourists. Staying near the Louvre or Notre-Dame is convenient, but it is different from how most Parisians use the city.

For first-time visitors who want local texture alongside the main sites, the 11th arrondissement and the Marais are useful bases. The 11th has an excellent concentration of independent restaurants and bars. The Marais combines architecture and museums with a strong neighbourhood atmosphere.

The Eiffel Tower is illuminated after dusk and its sparkling display runs at scheduled intervals. Check the current official schedule before planning a specific time, as timings can change.

For personal photographs, enjoy it freely. Commercial publication of images showing the nighttime light installation may involve copyright considerations, so professional and commercial users should confirm the applicable permissions.

Our preferred evening viewpoints include Pont d’Iena and the Trocadero esplanade. The tower itself survived beyond its original concession partly because it proved useful for radio transmission.

The Louvre displays tens of thousands of works. Most people arrive intending to see everything and leave after walking a very long way through only a fraction of it.

Our approach is to choose three or four rooms and see them properly. The Denon Wing contains the Mona Lisa, Italian paintings and major Greek and Roman sculpture. Spend a little time with the Mona Lisa, then give more attention to the larger paintings nearby that most visitors rush past.

Book a morning slot, arrive near opening time, and check current entry arrangements before visiting. Afternoon visits in peak season can become more about crowd management than art appreciation.

Our most reliable advice for eating well is simple: restaurants designed entirely around tourist traffic are rarely the most rewarding choice. Walk one or two streets away from a major attraction and look for places serving local workers and residents.

The formule du midi, a fixed lunch menu, is how many Parisians eat well during the day. Prices and menus change, so check the board before sitting down. The 11th, Marais, residential Montmartre and streets around Rue du Bac are consistently useful areas to explore.

Paris’s Metro is fast, frequent and comprehensive. It is the logical choice for travelling between distant points quickly. What visitors miss underground is the city itself: streets, architecture, the Seine, bridges and the change from one arrondissement to another.

The bus network gives you a moving window seat on Paris. Routes can change, so use the current official transport app or map to choose a cross-city route passing through neighbourhoods you want to understand.

Sacre-Coeur is beautiful, and the view from its esplanade is worth the climb. Its political history is more complicated. The basilica emerged in the aftermath of the Paris Commune of 1871, a workers’ uprising suppressed with enormous violence, and was promoted as an act of national penance.

The historical meaning of the building remains contested. Standing outside it with that context makes the view over Paris considerably more complex.

The final thing we tell groups is this: leave one morning unscheduled. Paris rewards wandering in a way very few cities do.

The Marais, Canal Saint-Martin, Belleville and streets north of Place de la Bastille are full of things that do not appear on lists because they are simply parts of a city going about its life. Pick a direction and walk for two hours without consulting a map more than necessary.
