The standard tour explores the district from the outside. This tour takes you inside two of Budapest’s most remarkable and rarely fully-explored landmarks, including 15 metres underground into a former Top Secret Cold War nuclear bunker. It is the most complete version of the Castle Hill experience available.

What is the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum and why is it worth visiting?

The Hospital in the Rock is one of Budapest’s most extraordinary and undervisited attractions. Built into the cave system beneath Castle Hill, it served as an emergency hospital during the Siege of Budapest in 1944–45, treated casualties during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, and was secretly converted into a Cold War nuclear bunker — remaining classified until 2002. Fifteen metres underground, the museum features reconstructed operating theatres, medical wards and 200 lifelike wax figures. Mobile phones do not work inside. It is an immersive, moving and genuinely unique experience that no other Castle Hill tour combines with a guided walking tour in a single booking.

How long is the Ultimate Budapest Castle Hill Experience?

he full experience runs approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. This includes the guided Castle Hill walking tour of around 2.5 hours, the interior visit to Matthias Church, and the one-hour guided tour of the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum. This is a full half-day experience. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as the route includes cobblestone streets, inclines, stairs and underground tunnels.

Most Castle Hill tours cover the exterior landmarks and move on. This experience goes further in every direction — deeper into the history through expert storytelling, inside Matthias Church with a guide who explains what you are actually looking at, and literally underground into a space that was hidden from the public until 2002. What is the cancellation and rescheduling policy?

We offer free cancellation and free rescheduling on all bookings made more than 24 hours before your scheduled tour departure time. If your plans change, simply contact us as early as possible and we will rebook you onto another available date at no additional charge.

Cancellations or changes requested less than 24 hours before departure are not possible, and the booking will be treated as non-refundable. This policy exists because our tours operate with a limited number of guests, and last-minute cancellations prevent us from offering the spot to other travellers.

We strongly recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred date, particularly during peak travel seasons (June to September) when availability fills quickly. If you are booking for a group, please contact us directly before completing your booking so we can advise on availability and any group-specific arrangements.

Is this tour accessible for guests with reduced mobility or physical limitations?

We want to be transparent about this so that every guest can make an informed decision before booking. This tour is not currently recommended for guests using wheelchairs, motorised scooters or other mobility assistance devices. The tour route includes a significant amount of walking and covers surfaces that can be challenging, including cobblestones, hills, inclines, declines and stairs across both venues.

Strollers and baby carriages cannot be accommodated on this tour.

We also ask that all participants be in good general health. If you have a medical condition or are not accustomed to regular exercise, we recommend consulting your doctor before booking.
